Details
The death toll from the devastating double earthquake in Venezuela has exceeded 4,000. At least 4,118 people died and 16,740 were injured as a result of two successive earthquakes on June 24, which razed entire areas to the ground in the coastal state of La Guaira. Thousands more are missing
It is noted that the 7.5 magnitude earthquake - the strongest in Venezuela in over a century - occurred 39 seconds after a 7.2 magnitude tremor, destroying entire multi-story residential buildings.
The scale of the recovery efforts facing Venezuela, where public services have severely deteriorated due to a prolonged economic crisis, is enormous.
On Wednesday, the United Nations made an urgent appeal for nearly $300 million for earthquake relief operations to help 1.3 million people in urgent need in the South American country, where non-governmental organizations had until recently been the target of government repression. Mobile kitchens and clinics, as well as field hospitals, are now scattered across public spaces in the northern state of La Guaira, where most of the destruction occurred.

Venezuela is creating a fund totaling $200 million to aid reconstruction in parts of the country affected by two powerful earthquakes last week that killed at least 2,595 people.
