The Ministry of Education explained what exactly the senior school reform is changing

As part of the reform of the senior school, primary schools and gymnasiums will not be closed, they will remain. At the same time, the choice of profiles and subjects by students will be changed: in the area where the student lives, the educational institution must offer various profiles, and not just humanitarian ones. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, reports UNN.

Details

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine explained what the reform of the senior school actually envisages.

What the reform will change

  1. Students' choice of profiles and subjects / courses. In the area where the student lives, the educational institution/-s must offer a variety of profiles, not just humanities.
    1. To implement the reform, it is necessary to change the network of educational institutions. Senior students should study in large lyceums: the more students in parallel, the more groups can be created to choose profiles and subjects / courses. Then it will be possible to offer teachers in lyceums a full workload, as well as to ensure the teaching of specialized subjects / courses. Also, lyceums will be equipped with the necessary equipment.
      1. It is best if lyceums are separated. After all, high school students need different approaches than younger students, and the way of organizing education can be different (for example, alternating groups instead of classes, studying one subject within a semester according to the modular principle, etc.).

What the reform does not change

        • Gymnasiums and primary schools (1–9, 5–9, 1–4 grades) WILL NOT BE CLOSED. However, it is proposed to change the type of individual educational institutions. Some of them will become lyceums (teaching mostly high school students), others will become gymnasiums and primary schools and will gather children of the community of the appropriate age.

For example, in the Sheptytsky community (Lviv region), the reorganization of the network of educational institutions is already taking place. Currently, there is one separate academic lyceum (there will be two), most of the other institutions are gymnasiums (1–9 grades) and one is a primary school (1–4 grades). The community did not close schools and does not plan to

          - the agency said in a statement.
          • Primary school will remain as close as possible to the child's place of residence. This rule is regulated by law and does not require changes.
            • Minimum and maximum number of students in grades 1–9. The minimum number of students is 5, the maximum is 24 in primary school, 30 in basic school.

Will there be funding for equipment for lyceums?

It is noted that the state already allocates funds for equipment for laboratories and workshops. This year, UAH 500 million has been allocated for pilot 10th grades - classrooms of natural science, mathematical and technological educational fields will be equipped.

Also, the Government recently approved another UAH 500 million for the equipment of biology, geography, mathematics, physics, chemistry and STEM laboratories of institutions that will be lyceums from 2027.

Last year, UAH 1.22 million of the NUSH subsidy was allocated to natural science classrooms, and this year, UAH 1.39 billion - to classrooms of natural science, mathematical educational fields, interdisciplinary and integrated courses. Some of these equipped institutions will become lyceums.

              Let us remind

The Cabinet of Ministers approved a draft law that provides for changes in the rules for granting deferrals to students and teachers.
