Following the "coalition of the willing" summit in Paris, Starmer was asked about his views on "assurance forces," as recently described by Emmanuel Macron, for Ukraine.
"A group of countries has asked Emmanuel and me to lead the coordination of efforts," he began.
"It is a force created for deterrence, to send a message to Putin that this agreement will be defended - that is the best description of it," Starmer said.
However, there is a catch that Macron did not mention, the publication notes.
"This is done in recognition of the fact that we also need US involvement," Starmer said.
He declined to elaborate on which countries have expressed a desire to contribute and in what way, but says there are "200 planners from 30 countries" in the coalition.
Starmer was also asked about the apparent differences in tone adopted by him and US President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine and Russia.
The British Prime Minister, as stated, "immediately parried".
"President Trump is absolutely clear that he wants a lasting peace in Ukraine, and that guides all his actions," Starmer said.
"What we need to do now, in my opinion, is to increase the pressure on Russia," he added, avoiding the question.
Dissatisfied with his answer, another reporter asked him to explain the apparent gap in worldview.
"I believe that the goal is the right goal, and that is a lasting peace that ensures the security and sovereignty of Ukraine," he said, adding again that this is what Trump wants.
