The government of Bangladesh considers nuclear energy as a way to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and protect the country from energy crises caused by geopolitical conflicts.

The project became more expensive due to delays

The delay had huge financial consequences for Bangladesh. Timely completion would not only have avoided this huge cost increase but also helped us reduce spending on fossil fuel imports

said Shafiqul Islam, a professor of nuclear engineering at the University of Dhaka.

According to Bloomberg, due to the devaluation of the local currency and construction delays, the cost of the project in national currency has increased significantly. At the same time, the authorities are already considering the possibility of building small modular reactors, which, in their opinion, could be put into operation faster and built cheaper.

According to experts, the implementation of the Rooppur project will allow Bangladesh to avoid building new large base power plants in the coming years and create conditions for more active development of renewable energy.
