According to the agency, demonstrators marched along the city's main boulevard to Skanderbeg Square. There is no independent confirmation of the number of participants, but footage from the scene indicates a crowd of several thousand. The protests, which have been ongoing for over a month, were initially sparked by plans to build an elite resort in a protected coastal zone, linked to US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, but later escalated into a large-scale anti-government movement.
Protests ended in clashes with police
During the action, protesters chanted "New Albania" and "Edi Rama, resign." One of the symbols of the demonstration was a large bust of the prime minister, which participants toppled using a rope, referencing the toppling of the monument to communist dictator Enver Hoxha in 1991. Protesters also brought symbolic "birthday cakes" made of cement and balloons in the shape of pink flamingos, which have become a symbol of the protest movement.
After the main action ended, some participants headed to the police station, demanding the release of people detained during previous protests near the parliament.
According to the Associated Press, during the clashes, protesters smashed the windows of the police building. Law enforcement officers responded by using water cannons to disperse the crowd.
