President of Hungary Tamás Sulyok signed constitutional amendments that, among other things, provide for the early termination of his presidential powers. He announced this in a video address on Saturday, reports UNN.

It is noted that after the Hungarian parliament, where the party "Tisza" of Péter Magyar has a constitutional majority, approved the constitutional amendments, Sulyok had 5 days to sign the decision or veto it. The signing deadline expired on Saturday.

In his address, the president emphasized that throughout his life he has been guided by respect for the law. According to him, the adoption of the constitutional amendment became a "fateful national issue" for the country, which goes beyond personal or political interests.

Sulyok stated that a president in a similar situation has only two options: to fulfill his constitutional duty and sign the law, or to refuse to sign, which, in his belief, would mean a violation of the law.

"I am fulfilling my duty under the Basic Law, after carefully weighing my legal options and conscience. My signature is the final seal of my duties as President of the Republic and my full respect for the institution of the Presidency of the Republic under any circumstances," Sulyok said.

After the signed law is published in the official gazette, Sulyok's mandate will terminate the following day.
