The update came as rescue workers continue searching for more people trapped under rubble during the critical "golden window" of up to 72 hours after the earthquake. The death toll is expected to rise significantly as search teams are expected to find more victims.
"We haven't slept a moment, trying to save lives," Rodríguez told Venezuelan state broadcaster VTV, also praising the arrival of international aid and emergency rescue teams. "We have saved dozens of lives."
VTV also reported that search and rescue teams are focusing efforts on the state of La Guaira, which appears to be the most affected region. The government said it has also set up a center for storing food, water, and medicine for those in need at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Caracas.
