Forecasters predict a mild start to winter with wet snow on St. Nicholas and temperature contrasts in the second decade of December. In the South, warming up to +15°C is possible, while in the Carpathians frosts up to -10°C are expected.

Calendar winter in Ukraine started with mild and stable weather. According to forecasts, in December, Ukrainians are waiting for both warm days and manifestations of winter bad weather. This was stated during a briefing by Natalia Petukha, press secretary of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, reports UNN.

Weather for early December

Currently, weather conditions are affected by an anticyclone, the center of which is located in the north-east of the territory of Ukraine. Its crest keeps stable weather with almost no precipitation, but with the characteristic winter anticyclones of gloom, high humidity and fog.

"We urge drivers to be careful, and pedestrians to use reflective elements," said Ptukha.

Such weather conditions will last until the end of the working week, but from December 6, synoptic processes are expected to be rebuilt. On St. Nicholas, wet snow is possible, which in some places will turn into rain.

"We don't predict snowdrifts yet," the spokeswoman said.

But in some places, a slight increase in snow cover is possible. Temperatures will mostly be around zero, with slight fluctuations: slightly lower at night, slightly higher during the day.

Second Decade of December: temperature contrasts

The second decade of the moon will be dynamic due to the passage of atmospheric fronts.

Expected:

- Increased wind during the passage of fronts;

- Mixed phase precipitation-rain in case of positive temperatures, sleet in case of negative temperatures;

- Temperature fluctuations depending on the region.

In the south of the country, it is possible to warm up to +15 °C in the daytime, which is due to the influence of warm air masses from the southwest. At the same time, in the West and North, the temperature will remain around 0 °C.

"The coldest weather is in the Carpathians. The Carpathians remain a hotbed of winter weather," Ptukha said.

At night, frosts of up to -10 °C are possible there. Now the snow cover in the region is 17-26 CM, but its significant increase is not yet predicted.

Will this winter be similar to last year?

The trend towards warmer weather continues, which is confirmed by both Ukrainian forecasters and global forecasting centers. In recent months, average monthly temperatures regularly exceed the climatic norm.

Although December will generally be within the normal range, temperatures may rise in the second decade, especially in the southern regions.

"However, we do not rule out cold air bays," the spokeswoman said.

Scientists are also monitoring the state of the ultra-polar vortex, which sometimes causes a sharp cold snap in Europe. So far, significant "cold dips" are not expected.

Recommendations of weather forecasters

Ukrainians are advised to prepare for changeable weather with possible manifestations of winter in the form of ice, increased wind and precipitation. You should be especially vigilant during atmospheric fronts, which will be accompanied by unstable weather conditions.
