University students will be allowed to choose their own pace of study: Verkhovna Rada plans to decide on the bill
Kyiv • UNN
Draft law No. 10177 aims to allow university students to choose their own pace of study by adjusting the duration of a bachelor's program from 3 to 5 years, based on their individual workload.
The Verkhovna Rada is planning to consider draft law No. 10177 on the development of individual educational trajectories and improvement of the educational process in higher education at one of its next meetings, UNN reports citing the agenda of the Verkhovna Rada.
As MP Serhiy Babak, chairman of the Committee on Education, Science and Innovation, told earlier, this document suggests that university students choose the pace of learning.
The draft law is important because it allows each student in a higher education institution to build their own educational trajectory. If the estimated time for studying 240 credits at a bachelor's degree is currently 4 years, then this draft law can reduce the period to 3 years due to a larger annual workload or, conversely, extend it to 5 years by reducing the annual workload

According to him, not all students learn the same way: some can master the disciplines faster, can take on a bigger workload per year, and some find it a bit harder to do so.
"We want to meet students halfway, so that they can build the pace of learning that is comfortable for them. This is the main idea of the bill. It is also envisaged that it will be possible to enter the first year not in a specific specialty but in an industry. After the second year, it will be possible to choose the exact specialization," said the MP.
He emphasized that the draft law provides not only for greater autonomy for students but also for higher education institutions.
The bill has already passed the first reading.
