Stunt performers will start receiving "Oscars"

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will add a new "Oscar" category for stunt design. The first statuette will be awarded for films released in 2027, the 100th anniversary of the ceremony.

After many years of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences largely ignoring stunt work, a new category is planned to be added to the Oscars. The Academy has announced that it intends to begin awarding Oscars for stunt design, starting with films released in 2027 for the 100th anniversary of the awards ceremony, UNN writes with reference to the Academy's press release and The Verge.
The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the creation of an annual competitive Oscar for Achievement in Stunt Design, beginning with the 100th Oscars for films released in 2027.
Details
"From the earliest days of filmmaking, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking," said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Young in a statement on the new category. "We are proud to honor the groundbreaking work of these technical and creative artists and salute their dedication and commitment to achieving this milestone."
The Academy has not yet announced any other selection rules for films to be nominated in the new category. "Specifics of the award presentation will be determined by the Academy's Board of Governors and executive leadership in the future," the Academy said in a press release.
Additions
While there are currently more than 100 stunt performers in the Academy's Production and Technology Branch, as The Hollywood Reporter notes, the organization once presented only two (honorary) Oscars to stunt performers. Now that a new category has been created, we will likely begin to see studios paying much more attention to the 'deadly' sets of their projects, notes The Verge.
