Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, during a speech at the collegium of the Ministry of Defense, made a series of false statements regarding the war in Ukraine. In particular, he again spoke about the "causes of the war," as well as the situation on the front line, particularly in Kupyansk, UNN reports.

During his speech, Putin stated that the Russian army captured more than 300 settlements in 2025. He traditionally called the occupation "liberation."

Putin also reiterated that "it was not Russia that started the war in 2022, but the West."

At the same time, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov made a false statement that the city of Kupyansk in Kharkiv region was allegedly already captured by Russian troops.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, stated that the Ukrainian Defense Forces control most of the city and continue to clear it of Russians. He added that Russian military officials - from Gerasimov, who was the first to lie about controlling the city, to Belousov - continue to lie even in front of Putin himself.

According to him, such actions can be attributed not only to the fear of losing positions for defeats, but rather to the desire of the elites and Putin's entourage to continue the war at any cost, which is why they tell him about victories. At the same time, Putin himself also wants the war to continue, Kovalenko clarified.
