Nick Frost, known for the Cornetto trilogy, is close to playing Rubeus Hagrid in the new HBO series. John Lithgow was previously approved for the role of Albus Dumbledore.

The HBO TV series "Harry Potter" has focused on a British veteran for its ensemble of characters in the magical world. Nick Frost, known for his roles in Edgar Wright's comedy trilogy "Cornetto", is close to a deal to play Rubeus Hagrid, the kind half-giant, the keeper of Hogwarts, Variety sources confirmed, writes UNN.

Details

HBO declined to comment on Frost's potential participation, although they gave an evasive answer that "We understand that such a high-profile series will generate a lot of rumors and speculation."

"As we move through the pre-production stage, we will only confirm details as deals are made," the network continued. This is the same statement that HBO released when reports surfaced that John Lithgow was in talks to play Albus Dumbledore - the actor has since confirmed his participation.

Reports of Frost's involvement came days after the actor posted a cryptic message on his Instagram that read: "What a bloody lovely day! It's happening, it's really happening. Keep calm."

Addition

Hagrid is a key figure in all seven books of the "Harry Potter" series by J.K. Rowling, first appearing to inform the series' 11-year-old protagonist that he is a wizard before escaping with him to Hogwarts. The character was played by Robbie Coltrane in the original Harry Potter film franchise, who appeared in all eight installments. Coltrane died in 2022 at the age of 72.

The 52-year-old actor will join a cast that now includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore. Paapa Essiedu is reportedly a leading contender for the role of Severus Snape. The roles of Harry, Hermione and Ron - the trio of main characters - are most likely to be played by newcomers, as Warner Bros. announced an open casting call for children ages 9 to 11 in the fall of 2024.

HBO plans to produce "Harry Potter" for a decade, adapting each of Rowling's books into one season of television. Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner and executive producer, and Mark Mylod will direct several episodes and executive produce.

Series author J.K. Rowling is also an executive producer. In recent years, the writer has become a controversial figure, even among her own fans, as she has made her campaign against transgender identity a central element of her online persona.

"J.K. Rowling has the right to express her personal views," an HBO Variety representative said in November. "We will continue to focus on developing a new series that will only benefit from her participation."
