Azerbaijan is a country located in the South Caucasus, at the crossroads of West Asia and Eastern Europe. It is bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south. The country's population is over 10 million people, and its capital is the city of Baku. The history of Azerbaijan dates back to ancient times, with the first state formations appearing in the late 4th — early 3rd millennia BC. In 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was proclaimed, becoming the first secular democratic republic in the Muslim world. After a period of Soviet rule, Azerbaijan restored its independence in 1991. Azerbaijan has territorial disputes with Armenia over the belonging of Nagorno-Karabakh.
