The main task of this unit is to coordinate actions aimed at protecting, preserving and preventing the destruction of cultural heritage sites.

Ukraine fulfills its obligations and uses all available mechanisms and tools to protect and preserve cultural property in times of war to the maximum extent possible. I thank the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces for supporting this initiative,

- said Mykola Tochytskyi, Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine.

The ministry explained that the cultural heritage protection department will function as part of the Joint Center for Civil-Military Cooperation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

This step was taken as part of the implementation of the provisions of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and its two protocols,

- the ICRC added.

The decision was approved by a joint directive of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The ministry clarified that the 1954 Hague Convention is the main international treaty in the field of protection of cultural property from the dangers of armed conflict. The document became the first international agreement of a universal nature that focuses exclusively on the protection of cultural property during armed conflict.
