Ukraine launches experimental project using long-haul three-unit road trains
Kyiv • UNN
The government has launched a two-year experiment using multi-trailer trucks on the Kyiv – Odesa route. This will help reduce logistics costs.

The government has decided to launch an experimental project regarding the movement of long-haul three-unit road trains. The Kyiv – Odesa and Odesa – Kyiv routes have been designated as test routes. This was reported by the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine, according to UNN.
A long-haul three-unit road train is a truck with several consecutively connected trailers or semi-trailers, which allows for the transportation of more cargo in a single trip
Such transport solutions have been used for many years in European countries, particularly in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and the Netherlands, helping to increase logistics efficiency, reduce transport costs, and decrease the number of trips.
The project is expected to:
- reduce costs for transportation, fuel, and vehicle maintenance;
- transport a larger volume of cargo with fewer trips;
- distribute the load on road infrastructure more efficiently;
- reduce greenhouse gas emissions by decreasing the number of shipments.
The experimental project will last for two years from the date the relevant resolution comes into force. The collected results will serve as the basis for making decisions on opening other logistics routes in Ukraine for this type of transport.
