Hantavirus-stricken cruise ship to arrive in Rotterdam today for quarantine and disinfection

The MV Hondius is set to arrive in Rotterdam for disinfection following a hantavirus outbreak. Three people have died as a result of the illness, and the crew will be placed under quarantine.
The cruise ship MV Hondius, which experienced a hantavirus outbreak, is scheduled to arrive at the port of Rotterdam on Monday for disinfection and quarantine measures. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

There are 25 crew members and two medical workers remaining on board the vessel. Dutch authorities are preparing quarantine conditions for them, including separate centers for foreign sailors. It is not yet known whether they will undergo the full recommended 42-day quarantine.
Three people died as a result of the outbreak
The hantavirus outbreak on the ship was first recorded on May 2, when the WHO received a report of a cluster of severe respiratory illnesses among passengers. At the time the incident began, there were approximately 150 passengers and crew members from 23 countries on board.

According to Reuters, three people have died since the start of the outbreak – a couple from the Netherlands and a German citizen. The ship was supposed to complete its route near Cape Verde, but passengers were prohibited from disembarking due to the threat of the virus spreading.
The WHO emphasized that the situation is not similar to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through rodents, although in rare cases it can spread between humans during prolonged close contact. The current outbreak is linked to the Andes virus, which previously circulated in Argentina and Chile.
