Airbus has launched a marketing campaign for a new modification of the A220-500 aircraft, which will accommodate 160-170 passengers. This model will compete with the Boeing 737 MAX 8 and promises lower fuel consumption.

Airbus has officially launched a marketing campaign for a new, larger modification of its narrow-body aircraft A220, known under the working title A220-500. This is reported by Reuters sources, noting that the European aviation giant has already begun negotiations with key airlines regarding potential orders for the model, which is to become a direct competitor to the Boeing 737 MAX 8. This is reported by UNN.

The new version of the aircraft, which airlines and analysts have been waiting for for years, will be able to accommodate 160 to 170 passengers. This fills the gap between the existing A220-300 and the larger A320neo family. Thanks to the use of modern composite materials and efficient engines, the A220-500 promises significantly lower fuel consumption and lower operating costs compared to competitors' analogues.
Airbus is betting on this aircraft as the future standard for medium-haul routes. This is a logical step to expand the company's most modern lineup
It is expected that the first customers may be large European and American carriers who seek to update their fleet with more environmentally friendly aircraft.
Supply chain challenges and timelines
Despite the start of sales, Airbus faces serious challenges in supply chains, which may affect production timelines. The company must balance increasing the output of existing A320 models and preparing new capacities for the A220-500. An official announcement about the launch of production may take place at one of the upcoming major air shows in 2026, and the first deliveries to customers are expected no earlier than the end of the decade.
