Latvia allocates over 2 million euros to protect Riga airport from drones

The Latvian government has decided to allocate 2.42 million euros to strengthen the protection of Riga Airport from unauthorized drone flights. This is reported by UNN with reference to Delfi.

Details

The project prepared by the Ministry of Communications envisages the introduction of modern complex technologies for detecting and countering drones.

Within the framework of the project, it is planned to create infrastructure for drone detection, equip the airport with sensors and provide the necessary software

It is noted that the goal of the project is to increase the airport's ability to detect, identify, track and neutralize drones that carry out unauthorized flights in critical areas and on the airport's territory.

The ministry explains that Riga Airport is an important state-level infrastructure, the impact on which, its destruction or reduction of its operational capacity complicates the performance of state functions and threatens the security of society and the state.

According to Riga Airport's financial report for nine months, the acquisition of equipment for detecting, identifying, tracking and neutralizing drones has been completed.

The supplier has already been identified, the contract was signed on July 6, 2025, and the first part of the delivery was completed in the third quarter of this year. For the full implementation of the airport's solution, investments of 3.5 million euros are required.

In recent months, at least ten European countries have recorded drone incursions into their airspace, causing concern and leading to increased security measures. Romania, Poland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, France, Germany, Lithuania, Estonia and Belgium have witnessed these incidents, some of which are linked to Russia.
