Lviv has completed an architectural competition to create a memorial complex of military graves of Heroes of Ukraine, which will include a burial area, a memorial park, a museum, a monument to an unknown soldier, a chapel and a columbarium. Details

The architectural competition in Lviv for the creation of a memorial complex for the war graves of the Heroes of Ukraine on Mechnikova Street lasted three months. It is planned to include a burial area, a memorial park, a museum, a monument to an unknown soldier, a chapel, and a columbarium.

The competition was won by architects Viktor Holubev and Dmytro Reifschneider from Khmelnytsky with a conceptual design. It will be further developed with the participation of an advisory board consisting of military personnel, families of the victims, and representatives of the clergy, with whom the architects recently met.

The project proposed to make the cemetery's tombstones from white architectural concrete with the addition of natural stone ("terrazzo"). The tombstones will have space for a photo, name, and years of life of the deceased, as well as space for flowers and candles. Seating with a unified design will also be installed near each grave.

The columbarium, which is an important part of the burial area, will be a place for the burial of urns with ashes, which can be accessed both by stairs and by means of a ramp.

At the front of the complex near Mechnikova Street , it is proposed to arrange a square with a monument to an unknown soldier. The concept of the new square is to change the axis of the city to the historical one. This axis is directed to the northeast and east to an average point that combines the coordinates of the battles for Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Avdiivka, Debaltseve, Ilovaysk, Kherson, and the main line of defense of Ukraine. This axis shift is intended to draw attention to Ukraine's geographic unity and contrast with the city's structure, cutting into it

- says project author Dmytro Reifschneider.

The shape of the Monument to the Unknown Warrior will resemble a shield and can have many symbolic meanings. However, the main element is the green paths that symbolically stretch to the sky, and the green on the shield symbolizes the color of the nation that stood up to defend the state. The square in front of the monument will also feature a plaque with graphic insignia of the brigades and units whose heroes fought for Ukraine and a place to lay flowers.

A cross in honor of the Ukrainian Galician Army will be installed at the end of the "Mars field" to close the central axis of the complex. A place for prayer will be provided near the cross.
