The IAEA received a report from the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP that this morning the neighboring Zaporizhzhia TPP—where the switchyard providing power to the ZNPP is located—came under heavy shelling, the IAEA reported on Thursday, UNN writes.

Details

"The IAEA has received reports from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) that the nearby Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant (ZTPP), whose switchyard provides electricity to the ZNPP, was under heavy shelling this morning," the IAEA reported.

As noted, "the IAEA team at the ZNPP saw light smoke coming from the direction of the ZTPP and heard sounds of military activity."

The IAEA stated that "this incident causes serious concern regarding the ZNPP's sole power line, which has been disconnected several times in recent weeks, leading to the plant's total dependence on emergency diesel generators for the electricity needed to cool the six reactors and avoid the threat of a nuclear accident."

"Currently, the power line is still connected. According to information, ZTPP personnel are currently in shelters due to the shelling," the IAEA noted.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reportedly "expresses deep concern over the report of shelling and says it must stop immediately to avoid the danger of a prolonged power outage incident at the ZNPP."
