Blinken sends message to Iran and Hezbollah after killing Hamas leaders - media

US Secretary of State Blinken asked Qatar to convey a message to Iran and Hezbollah, urging them not to escalate the situation after the assassination of Hamas leaders. Qatar agreed to mediate in this matter.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken asked Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani during a conversation with him on Wednesday, August 1,  to convey a message to Iran and Hezbollah after the elimination of Hamas leaders. This was reported by CNN, according to UNN. 

A CNN source said that Blinken's messages were a call to calm the escalation and not to react to the assassination of Hezbollah leader Fouad Shukr and Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The source added that the Qatari prime minister agreed to pass on the message.

According to CNN, Qatar has regularly acted as a mediator between the United States and Iran

The Prime Minister of Qatar asked via Platform X how to conduct negotiations in light of the "assassination" of one of the parties negotiating with him, which coincides with the murder of Ismail Haniyeh.

A representative of the US State Department declined to comment.

Addendum

On Wednesday, July 31, one of the leaders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an air strike in Iran.  In response to Haniyeh's assassination, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered a direct strike against Israel. 

On August 1, the Israeli Defense Forces announced the elimination of the commander of the military wing of Hamas, Muhammad Deif, the second in command of the terrorist organization in Gaza.
