According to the newspaper, Scholz "is increasingly supporting diplomatic efforts to end Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine." "He called his discussions on the matter in China on Friday at the SPD conference in Norderneußen a "very important boost" for this," the newspaper notes.
As indicated, Scholz emphasized that he agreed with the Chinese leadership on the need for peace conferences in Switzerland. "This is something that is indispensable in this difficult process, and I am grateful that Germany and I were able to contribute," he said.
Switzerland is planning a peace summit for June 15 and 16, to which it wants to invite about 100 countries, including Ukraine. Russia should not be present, but countries "friendly" to Russia, such as China, Brazil and South Africa, should be. During his visit to Beijing on Tuesday, Scholz agreed with Chinese President Xi Jinping to coordinate this and possible future conferences "intensively and positively," the newspaper said.
