Israeli Defense Forces announce elimination of head of Hamas military wing in Gaza

The Israeli Defense Forces announced the elimination of Mohammed Deif, commander of Hamas's military wing in Gaza. The strike was carried out on July 13, 2024, in the Khan Younis area, and other militants were also killed.

The Israeli Defense Forces announced the elimination of the commander of the Hamas military wing, Mohammed Deif, the second in command of the terrorist organization in Gaza. UNN reports this with reference to the IDF statement. 

On July 13, 2024, IDF fighters conducted a strike in the Khan Younis area, and after intelligence, it was confirmed that Mohammed Deif was killed in the strike

- The IDF said in a statement. 

Mohammed Deif was the commander of the military wing of Hamas and the second in command of the terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip. According to the IDF, it was Deif who initiated, planned and carried out the October 7 massacre, during which 1,200 people were killed in southern Israel and 251 hostages were abducted in the Gaza Strip.

As noted, other terrorists were also killed in the strike. 

On Wednesday, July 31, one of the leaders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an air strike in Iran.  In response to Haniyeh's assassination, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered a direct strike against Israel. 

UN Security Council (UNSC) countries condemned the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and called for intensified diplomatic efforts to prevent all-out war in the Middle East. Iranian Ambassador to the UN Amir Saeed Iraniani blamed the United States for Haniyeh's assassination.
