Experts of Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise examine the crash sites of downed Russian missiles in Kyiv and determine their type

Mobile teams of experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise have begun inspecting the places where the wreckage of downed missiles fell to determine the types of weapons that Russia used today to strike Kyiv. This was reported to UNN by KFI.

Context

On Friday, December 20, Kyiv came under another missile attack by Russian aggressors. The morning attacks caused damage to residential buildings and infrastructure facilities. All relevant services are involved in the aftermath. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Ukrainian Defense Forces shot down 5 ballistic missiles and 40 of 65 UAVs launched by the Russian army at night and in the morning of December 20. There is one dead and one wounded in Kyiv.

According to preliminary data, we have clear characteristics of specific types of weapons, which are determined by contextual features, that is, the parameters of damage to objects at the scene, the peculiarities of fragmentation of parts and fragments, and their physical characteristics

- said the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise.

The specialists of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise examine the scene to fully record the circumstances, document the consequences of the destruction, and quickly identify parts and fragments of the munitions used by the Russian Federation. Experts conduct a visual analysis of the fragments by their size, markings (serial numbers, codes or factory marks indicating their origin and manufacturers remain on the fragments) and other features. Studying the effects of the damage allows us to identify the characteristics of the weapon used.

The Institute added that the ultimate goal of identifying the weapons used by Russia is to provide data for court proceedings on physical evidence, to prove the use of a specific type of weapon and to confirm its origin, which is important for documenting war crimes.

Add

It is worth noting that the Russians are constantly trying to modify and modernize all types of missiles and drones they have, which are used for attacks on Ukraine. In a commentary to UNN, KFI experts explainedwhat features are involved and what role Western components play in the changes of enemy weapons. The enemy uses not only Western components. According to Oleksandr Ruvin, director of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise, components for UAVs used by the enemy to attack Ukraine are supplied by about 50 manufacturers from China.

In addition, the experts of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise found that the Russian X-69 missiles used by the occupiers to hit Ukraine are made of several types of weapons and have foreign components.

Earlier, KFI experts also  described the technical features of North Korean missiles used by Russia to attack Ukraine.
