Belarus officially joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), expanding the organization to 10 member states.

On Thursday, July 4, Belarus officially joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Thus, the SCO now consists of 10 states. This was reported by UNN with reference to BelTA.

He also expressed confidence that Belarus will make a significant contribution to strengthening security in the SCO area.

The SCO was founded by the leaders of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in 1996. Initially, the organization was called the Shanghai Five, but it was renamed in 2001 after Uzbekistan joined.

In the following years, India, Pakistan and Iran also joined the SCO.
