A drone that flew in from Moldova after Russia’s overnight attack on Ukraine was found in Romania

In Romania, near the border with Moldova, fragments of a drone were found that had presumably crossed the airspace of the neighboring country after a Russian attack on Ukraine. This was reported by Romania's Ministry of National Defence, writes UNN.

Details

The drone was discovered on August 24 in the yard of a house in the village of Chushlya, Vrancea County, not far from the border with Galați County. The area within a radius of 300 meters was evacuated, and specialists examined the device that had been found.

After the checks were completed, it was established that the drone did not carry an explosive charge

- Romania's Ministry of National Defence reported.

According to the ministry, the items found most likely belonged to a drone that entered Romanian airspace from Moldovan territory on the morning of August 24. Its exact origin and model have not yet been established.

Moldovan airspace was temporarily closed

Earlier, Moldova's Ministry of Defence reported that an unidentified drone entered the country's airspace at 05:55 from the direction of Odesa region. It was heading toward Vulcănești, and at 06:09 it left Moldova's territory in the direction of Romania.

Because of the drone's appearance, airspace in southern Moldova was restricted for approximately 15 minutes. Moldova's Ministry of Defence said that the device flew over the country's territory after Russian airstrikes on Ukraine overnight.

In Romania, after radar signals were detected, two F-16 fighter jets from the 86th Air Base in Borcea and an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter were scrambled. At 06:12, a RO-Alert message was issued to residents of the area.

Christian Popoviciu, a representative of Romania's Ministry of Defence, said that the last radar contact with the drone was recorded at 06:37.

We cannot confirm either its origin or its model, but we are continuing the investigation, and when we have all the details, we will release the information

- Popoviciu said.

Residents of Galați County reported that a drone had flown over their homes. Some of them also recorded the device on video, and after the air-raid alert was announced, they saw Romanian aircraft and a helicopter taking part in the search for it.
