5.9 billion euros from the first tranche of the 90-billion EU loan for Ukraine will go toward drones - Kallas

The first 5.9 billion euros from the first tranche of the 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine agreed upon by the EU should be directed this month toward drones, stated EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Monday at a press conference during an informal meeting of EU defense ministers in Cyprus, UNN reports.

Details

"Regarding practical support for Ukraine, ministers discussed the future of the European Peace Facility (EPF). As you know, Hungary is lifting its veto on blocking 6.6 billion euros, and I propose using these funds to reimburse member states for past weapons deliveries, finance new joint procurement, and support operations in the EUMAM Ukraine mission," Kallas noted.

According to her, the ministers also considered "the issue of deepening cooperation with Ukraine in the defense-industrial sector, particularly in the field of air defense, which is most needed now, and this should go hand-in-hand with promoting the production of Ukrainian systems in the European Union and the establishment of European companies in Ukraine."

The 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine is ready for disbursement, and the first payment of 5.9 billion euros is to be directed toward drones this month. In allocating funding, Ukraine's needs are the top priority

- Kallas emphasized.

Recall

The European Commission stated that the first tranche within the new 90 billion euro financial support package for Ukraine should be allocated by the end of June. Of this amount, 5.9 billion euros are earmarked for Ukraine's defense needs, and another 3.2 billion are within the macro-financial assistance program.
