2,500-year-old golden helmet returned to Romania after theft in the Netherlands

The ancient Cotofenești helmet and two bracelets were returned to Bucharest after being stolen from the Drenthe Museum. The artifacts were put on display under guard, and the search for another one is ongoing.

An ancient golden helmet, approximately 2,500 years old, stolen last year from a museum in the Netherlands, has been returned to Romania. This was reported by the Associated Press, writes UNN.

The artifact, along with two golden bracelets, was delivered to Bucharest after a 14-month investigation.
The Cotofenești helmet and bracelets, part of the Dacian civilization's heritage, arrived at Bucharest airport, after which they were transported under guard to the National Museum of History.

The artifacts have already been put on display under enhanced security.
Theft investigation
The valuables were stolen in January 2025 from the Drents Museum during an armed attack. Three suspects are involved in the case, and the trial is ongoing. A third golden bracelet has still not been found.

According to the investigation, the helmet suffered minor damage, while the bracelets were preserved in good condition. The Minister of Culture of Romania noted that this case showed the vulnerability of cultural heritage and its importance for national identity.
After being exhibited in Bucharest, the artifacts are planned to be sent for restoration.
