Italy (official name – Italian Republic) is a state in Southern Europe, occupying the Apennine Peninsula, as well as the large islands of Sicily and Sardinia. It borders France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, and is washed by the waters of several seas of the Mediterranean basin, including the Ligurian, Tyrrhenian, Adriatic, and Ionian Seas. The country has an area of about 301,340 km² and a population of approximately 59 million people, and its capital is Rome. Italy is the cradle of the great Roman Empire and the Renaissance.
