Zelenskyy signs law on farewell ritual for fallen warriors without bodies or remains

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law regulating the payment of military honors to soldiers who defended the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine and have been declared dead by a court. This was reported by UNN with reference to the press service of the Verkhovna Rada.

Draft Law No. 15029 "On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine 'On the Statute of Garrison and Guard Services of the Armed Forces of Ukraine' regarding the military farewell ritual" was received by the Verkhovna Rada on February 13 of this year. On May 14, it was included in the agenda and adopted in the first reading, and on May 19, it was signed by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.

This document introduces the Procedure for conducting a military farewell ritual for fallen defenders whose traditional burial is impossible due to the absence of a body, remains, or ashes.

The draft law allows for such persons to be paid proper military honors, including the presentation of the State Flag of Ukraine to relatives, near cenotaphs -symbolic memorial structures.

One of the main elements of the military funeral ritual, as a procedure for the solemn payment of military honors, is the presentation of the State Flag of Ukraine to the relatives of the fallen (deceased) person, as a symbol of the state that the fallen (deceased) person served faithfully to the end. In the future, this State Flag is kept by the relatives as a family heirloom and a memory of the fallen (deceased) person who defended the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine. At the same time, the military funeral ritual is conducted in the event of burial or reburial
