Ukraine will not participate in the UN Security Council meeting convened by Russia on 'threats to peace'. Ukraine's mission to the UN declared the Russian presidency illegitimate and condemned attempts to justify aggression.

Ukraine has refused to participate in the UN Security Council meeting chaired by Russia, which was convened by the Russian Federation under the agenda item “Threats to international peace and security.” This is stated in a statement by the Ukrainian mission to the UN, UNN reports.

Details

In connection with the Security Council meeting initiated by the Russian Federation under the agenda item “Threats to international peace and security” on July 25, 2024, the Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations deplores Russia's latest attempt to use the Council's platform to whitewash its war of aggression against Ukraine and denies responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Russian troops in Ukraine

It is noted that this will be the sixteenth meeting of the Council since September 2022, convened by Russia to address the contrived problem of “arms supplies to Ukraine,” which is the most absurd part of Russian propaganda spread by the Russian delegation and its puppet “briefers.

The statement points out that the frequency of such meetings can hardly help Russia to lend credibility to its fake narratives, as they often completely contradict each other. The Mission cites the example of Russia's missile attack on the Okhmatdyt children's hospital. At the time, the Russian representative to the UN, Nebenzia, claimed that the missile that hit Okhmatdyt was from a Ukrainian air defense system donated by Norway.

In addition to missiles, Russia continues to make extensive use of guided aerial bombs weighing up to 3 tons in the war against Ukraine. In June alone, the Russian army used more than 2,400 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine. About 700 of them were dropped in the Kharkiv region. Continued military support for Russia's aggressive war, including from Iran and the DPRK, remains a matter of serious concern, and the Security Council should address this issue

The delegation of Ukraine emphasizes its principled position on the illegitimacy of the occupation by the Russian Federation of the Soviet permanent seat in the Security Council. Consequently, Russia has no right, neither legally nor morally, to preside over the Security Council.

In this regard, we do not consider it possible to participate in meetings of the Security Council under the presidency of the Russian Federation unless there are justified reasons related to the need to bring urgent information to the attention of the Council, as was the case after the recent Russian attack on the Okhmatdyt hospital in Kyiv. At that time, the delegation of Ukraine asked its partners - members of the Council - to initiate an emergency meeting of the Council and requested the Security Council to participate in accordance with Article 37 of the Council's Provisional Rules of Procedure

Recall

Earlier, Ukraine's permanent representative to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, said that Russia is prone to commit the most heinous crimes during its presidency of the UN Security Council. It should be deprived of its permanent seat on the UN Security Council, which it obtained illegally.
