The 24-year-old man, identified as Navid Akram, remains in police custody at a hospital, New South Wales police said. He was wounded by law enforcement during the attack. According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's office, the attack was inspired by the Islamic State group.

The charges against Akram also include 40 counts of grievous bodily harm with intent to murder. His father, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, was killed by police.

As a result of the incident, the state of New South Wales, where Sydney is located, plans to strengthen gun control legislation next week.

The legislation will consider limiting the number of firearms an individual can possess, reclassifying shotguns, restricting the use of high-capacity magazines, and abolishing the appeal process after a decision to revoke a gun license, said state Premier Chris Minns.
