Ukraine calls on Georgia to respect the right of citizens to peacefully protest against the draft law on "foreign agents" and condemns the comments of the Georgian Prime Minister about the threat of "Ukrainization," emphasizing that the real threat to Georgia is Russification, not "Ukrainization.

Ukraine calls on Georgia to respect the right of citizens to peacefully protest against the draft law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence." Kyiv is also outraged by the statements of Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze about the threat of "Ukrainization." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is concerned about the deterioration of the internal political situation in Georgia in connection with the consideration of the draft law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence" in the Georgian Parliament. 

We call on all stakeholders to respect the right of Georgian citizens to peaceful protest and to seek a solution through constructive dialogue

The ministry emphasizes that respect for the rights and freedoms of citizens, as well as the involvement of civil society in addressing socially important issues, are necessary conditions for building the country's European future.

Kyiv also responded to the Georgian prime minister's accusations that the law should protect the country from possible "Ukrainization.

The comments of the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, regarding the threat of "Ukrainization" that the draft law is supposedly aimed at countering are outrageous. The use of our country's name in such a derogatory context causes additional damage to Ukrainian-Georgian relations. Russification, not mythical "Ukrainization," is a real threat to Georgia

The Foreign Ministry emphasizes that Ukraine is interested in a peaceful and friendly atmosphere in Georgia, has always strongly supported and continues to support Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

Context

The country's Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the law on "foreign agents" aims to protect Georgia from "Ukrainization", strengthen sovereignty and ensure the country's stable development.

Amid large-scale protests against the draft law on  "foreign agents," Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili promises to veto the law if it is passed by parliament.
