Romania warned of the risk of a massive Russian attack with jet-powered drones near the border with Ukraine

Analysts at the New Strategy Center believe that Russia may attack the Reni–Galați area with jet-powered drones to test Romania’s and NATO’s air defenses. Bucharest may initiate consultations under Article 4 of the NATO treaty.
The Romanian think tank New Strategy Center suggests that Russia may launch a massive attack using jet-powered drones against the Reni-Galați area to test the capabilities of Romania’s and NATO’s air defenses. Defense Express reports this, citing Defense Romania, writes UNN.

The report notes that following Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports and merchant vessels, the importance of the Danube route for exporting Ukrainian grain has increased significantly. At the same time, the record-low water level of the Danube has already reduced the carrying capacity of barges by 30–60%, making this transport corridor even more vulnerable.
At the first stage, Russia will most likely test the capability and response speed of the air defense system by launching coordinated waves of drones from several directions. The Galați-Reni area is particularly critical because of the extremely limited time available to intercept them
Romania does not rule out consultations under Article 4 of NATO
The study’s authors also suggest that Russia may resort to provocations using previously captured and restored Ukrainian drones for “false flag” attacks. Potential targets are also said to include the area where the Neptun Deep subsea gas pipeline is being built in Romania’s exclusive economic zone.
The report states that, in the event of further escalation, Bucharest may for the first time initiate consultations under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty to coordinate actions with its allies and strengthen intelligence and defense capabilities.
According to analysts, since the beginning of the full-scale war, more than 50 cases have already been recorded in which fragments of Russian drones fell on Romanian territory. In one incident, a drone struck a multistory residential building in the city of Galați, injuring two people.
