On April 8, 2026, Polish F-16 fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea. This was reported by UNN with reference to the Operational Command of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland.

Details

According to the Polish military, the Russian reconnaissance aircraft was conducting a reconnaissance mission in international airspace, without a filed flight plan and with its transponder turned off. It did not violate Polish airspace.

Intercepting aircraft is not a show of force, but one of the basic tools for ensuring real control over a country's airspace. Their purpose is to quickly identify objects that do not respond to air traffic control calls, move without a necessary flight plan, or violate current regulations.

- stated the Operational Command of the Polish Army.

They also added that thanks to the interception procedure, it is possible to instantly determine the nature of the flight, assess a potential threat, and, if necessary, take corrective actions, such as changing the course or directing the aircraft to land.

Recall

The Polish authorities decided to restrict flights over the eastern part of the country, along the Ukrainian and Belarusian borders, for three months. The restrictions will last from March 10 to June 9, 2026. This decision is explained by the need to ensure national security in the context of the dynamic geopolitical situation on Poland's and NATO's eastern flank.
