According to two UN agencies, at least 5,100 women and girls were killed by a partner or family member last year. This is an average of 140 victims every day. UNN writes about this with reference to ABCNews.
Details
Two UN entities, UN Women and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, have released statistics on the deaths of women and girls. It is stated that 51,100 women and girls were killed by an intimate partner or relative in 2023. This is an average of 140 victims per day. For comparison, according to the UN, 48,800 women and girls were killed by their intimate partners in 2022.
However, the report, which was published on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, notes that this increase is the result of more data from countries, not an increase in the number of murders.
The UN noted that women and girls around the world continue to suffer from extreme forms of violence, and no region is an exception. At the same time, the largest number of women and their loved ones was recorded in Africa - approximately 21,700 victims in 2023. Africa also had the highest number of victims in relation to its population - 2.9 victims per 100,000 people.
For comparison, last year, a large number of murders were observed in America. There were 1.6 female victims per 100,000 people and 1.5 victims per 100,000 in Oceania.
The figures were much lower in Asia - 0.8 victims per 100,000 and in Europe - 0.6 victims per 100,000.
According to the report, the intentional killing of women in Europe and America is mostly committed by their partners.
It is estimated that 80 percent of all homicide victims in 2023 were men, while 20 percent were women, but lethal domestic violence affects women far more than men. Moreover, almost 60 percent of all women who were intentionally killed in 2023 were victims of the murder of their partner/family member
The UN emphasized that despite the active fight against the problem of murders of women and girls by their partners and relatives in the world, the statistics are still high.
Homicides are often the culmination of recurring episodes of gender-based violence, which means they can be prevented through timely and effective interventions
Recall
According to statistics, in Ukraine in 2024, the number of reports of domestic violence increased by 80% compared to previous years. Experts attribute this to the effects of the war and post-traumatic stress disorder.
