During the year, KFI experts examined more than 5,000 suspicious banknotes, of which 30% were counterfeits. The experts spoke about the methods of verifying the authenticity of banknotes and shared tips for protecting against fraudsters.
As winter holidays approach, Ukrainians are actively preparing for New Year and Christmas celebrations: buying gifts, ordering services and decorating their homes. However, it is during this period that the activity of fraudsters who try to distribute counterfeit banknotes increases. UNN journalists learned about the peculiarities of counterfeit research from experts of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise.
The number of examinations ordered to detect counterfeit banknotes has been consistently high over time, which indicates the ongoing relevance of this problem. Over the past year, the NBU examined more than 5,000 suspicious banknotes, mostly foreign currency, of which about 30% were counterfeit. At the same time, the quality of counterfeiting has improved significantly. To produce them, criminals use modern equipment and information on security features, which is thoroughly studied by examining genuine banknotes, making it difficult for an average citizen to detect counterfeits
The study of banknotes in the course of forensic examination includes a set of methods and procedures aimed at establishing their authenticity, identifying signs of counterfeiting and determining how counterfeit banknotes are made.
Describing the examination process in simple terms, first, a visual inspection of the banknote is carried out to check the presence or absence of watermarks, security tapes, microtext, holograms, etc. Next, the microscopic examination of printing protection methods is carried out, analyzing the microtext, lines of the protective grid, and paper structure. Also, research is conducted by examining the luminescent properties of the paper itself and the printing protection in the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum, followed by a comparative study with undoubted samples of the relevant banknotes to identify coincidences or differences. The study is completed by issuing an expert opinion on the banknote's compliance or non-compliance with its characteristics. This process allows us to identify counterfeits, determine how they were made, and provide evidence to the court
In everyday life, experts advise, first of all, to study the information on security features of banknotes, which is available in large quantities in open sources, to check banknotes when receiving cash in stores, markets and other places, to pay attention to the paper of the banknote, the presence of watermarks, optically variable elements.
Counterfeits nowadays often consist of two thin sheets of paper glued together, which is not the case with genuine banknotes. The security tape on genuine banknotes is placed in the thickness of the paper, due to the process of manufacturing banknote paper, and is not glued between two sheets. It is advisable to check the presence of watermarks in the light - they should be clear and repeat the design elements of the banknote. The color change of certain elements when the bill is tilted is an important sign of authenticity. Some elements should feel embossed to the touch, especially the denomination and the inscription "Ukraine" in hryvnia. These are basic steps, but paying attention to them will help reduce the potential risk of fraud
Be careful and attentive when making purchases and holiday spending. Stay protected from fraud by following expert advice.
