The number of accommodation booked on online booking platforms in the European Union is growing. In 2023, 678.6 million nights in the EU were spent in short-term rental accommodation booked through Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group, or TripAdvisor. This is a 13.8% increase compared to 2022. The top destinations for summer 2023 include Croatia, Spain, and France. This is evidenced by Eurostat data released on Wednesday, UNN reports.

"In 2023, guests spent 678.6 million nights in short-term rental accommodation in the EU booked through Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or TripAdvisor. This corresponds to an increase of 13.8% compared to 2022 (596.5 million)," the European institution said.
As indicated, monthly stays booked through these platforms exceeded the previous year's figures in 11 out of 12 months, with an increase of more than 20% in the last quarter of 2023. In particular, in October, 55.3 million nights were spent in accommodation booked through online platforms, which is 21.9% more than in October 2022. In November, 31.8 million nights were spent (+20.0% compared to November 2022), and in December - 45.3 million (+25.8% compared to December 2022).
Top destinations in summer 2023: regions of Croatia, Spain and France
The most popular regions (at the NUTS 2 level) for short-term rentals booked through online platforms in the third quarter of 2023 were Jadranska-Crvatska in Croatia (23.7 million nights), Andalusia in Spain (14.0 million nights) and the French Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (12.2 million nights).
In the same quarter, among the top 20 most popular regions, 6 were in France, 5 in Spain and Italy, 2 in Greece, and 1 each in Croatia and Portugal.
