Moldova denounced the agreement on the creation of the CIS due to Russia's violation of the organization's principles. The country has already terminated about 70 agreements for integration into the EU.

The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova voted for the country's withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States by denouncing the Agreement on the Establishment of the CIS, the relevant protocol, and the organization's charter. This was reported by UNN with reference to deschide.md.

Details

The denunciation of these agreements was initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, which argues that the fundamental values and principles of the CIS are not observed by the Russian Federation.

This refers to:

  • the occupation of the Transnistrian region by Russian troops in the early 1990s, which continues to this day;
    • the occupation of parts of Georgia (Abkhazia and South Ossetia - ed.) during the same period, as well as their recognition by the Kremlin as "independent states" in 2008, after the 5-day Russian-Georgian war;
      • the occupation and annexation of parts of Ukraine as a result of armed aggression in 2014 and 2022 (Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia regions - ed.).

        Currently, Moldova has denounced about 70 agreements with the CIS as part of a continuous process of aligning national policy with EU standards and norms, as well as modernizing the country's legislative and economic framework. The country's relations with other CIS member states will continue on bilateral and multilateral platforms.

        Recall

        In January 2026, Moldova officially began the process of denouncing key agreements that form the legal basis of its CIS membership.

        UNN also reported that Ukraine withdrew from the Agreement on the Creation of a Joint Air Defense System of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The corresponding decision was made by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

        At the same time, according to the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, the economy of the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova is experiencing a crisis due to the cessation of Russian gas transit.
