Ukrainian territories most contaminated with mines are planned to be demined using drones, sensors, and artificial intelligence. Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister for Innovation, Development of Education, Science and Technology - Minister of Digital Transformation, spoke about the new technology of the Brave1 cluster, as reported by UNN.

Details

Fedorov noted that the area contaminated with mines in Ukraine is currently larger than the combined area of Austria and the Czech Republic. Therefore, Ukrainian artificial intelligence developers UADamage are working on a technology to accelerate the identification of mines, shells, and craters from explosions, which may also contain dangerous fragments.

Developers connect artificial intelligence to sensors. It identifies and classifies data about objects not only on the surface of the earth but also deep beneath it, and automatically maps them. This speeds up demining tenfold, and the process generally becomes safer for people.

– Fedorov explained.

UADamage technology works in three stages:

The first is strategic planning. The team uses satellite images and cadastral data to determine the degree of mine contamination in the area.

The second is visual assessment for the presence of mines and explosive objects. The territory is surveyed by a drone with a camera, and artificial intelligence detects dangerous objects.

The third stage is inspection underground and in the grass, where various sensors are used.

According to Fedorov, the most difficult aspect of demining, besides the number of mines, is that they can be at a significant depth and are not detected by metal detectors. Therefore, the technologies are still under development.

Additionally

Earlier, UNN wrote about how Ukrainian specialists are already using drones to survey marine areas and detect magnetic anomalies that may indicate the presence of underwater explosive devices, as part of demining efforts.
