The National Museum of History of Ukraine has received three Roman silver bars dated 306-337 that were rescued from illegal sale. The ingots, each weighing 342 grams, were found in Zakarpattia, and their total value is almost UAH 3.5 million.

The National Museum of History of Ukraine received three silver bars from the Roman period that were saved from illegal sale, UNN reports.

The Prosecutor General's Office handed over a unique treasure to the National Museum of History of Ukraine - three silver Roman bars (306-337 AD) that were rescued from illegal sale and returned to the state.

The treasure was found in Khust district of Zakarpattia. A local resident tried to sell one of the bars through an online store. This fact was discovered by an employee of the National Museum, who reported the crime to the prosecutor's office.

Law enforcement officers managed to prevent the attempted sale of the silver bar, and during a search of the seller's home, they found two more similar items. Experts managed to establish the period of time when the original Roman silver bars were dated - 306-337. Each of them weighs 342 grams, and the value of all of them is almost UAH 3.5 million.

During a presentation  at the museum, Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said that only a few similar ingots have been found in Europe to date.

The archaeologist said that such ingots were made of high-quality silver and were stamped with a workshop hallmark to certify the purity of the metal. This meant that the ingot was minted in the imperial court.

Archaeological artifacts that were illegally exported from Ukraine and intercepted in the Netherlands were handed over to the National Museum of History.
