South Korea's Ministry of Unification explained that the request was sent to Pyongyang via journalists in the form of a text message, as there is currently no active communication channel between the sides with the North Korean military.

Since our naval forces are currently searching for the missing person, we ask for cooperation in the search and return on humanitarian grounds

– the statement from the South Korean side reads.

According to the ministry, the sailor went missing while serving in the coast guard in the Sea of Japan. Seoul assumes that the current may have carried him into North Korea's territorial waters.
