A joint statement by Israeli intelligence agencies "Mossad" and "Shin Bet" states that the plan, attributed to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was thwarted several weeks ago.
According to the Israeli side, the intention was to attack the pipeline through which Azerbaijani oil is transported through Georgia to Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea.
In addition, it is alleged that the group planned attacks on the Israeli embassy, a synagogue in Baku, and representatives of the Jewish community of Azerbaijan.
Reuters notes that members of the cell were detained by Azerbaijani law enforcement officers. According to Israeli intelligence services, they allegedly seized explosive drones and fragmentation charges.
The cell collected intelligence on targets using various methods, including physical surveillance and photography, acting under direct instructions from handlers in Iran
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has not yet publicly commented on these accusations.
