ISIS-linked militants kill over 30 civilians in eastern Congo

Rebels linked to the Islamic State group have killed more than 30 people in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This was reported by the Associated Press, citing local officials, writes UNN.

Details

Fighters from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) carried out an attack on Wednesday night in the village of Bafwakoa in the east of the country, near the border with Uganda. The ADF is a Ugandan Islamist group linked to IS that operates on both sides of the border.

The attack occurred amid the possible end of the war in eastern Congo against another rebel group — M23, which is supported by Rwanda.

"Yesterday, at about 7 p.m., ADF militants arrived and launched an attack. They set fire to houses in the village and killed about 32 people," Samuel Banapia, a local civil society representative, said by phone.

According to local authorities, at least 30 people were killed with machetes, several people went missing, and at least two were taken hostage.

The army cannot contain the group's activities while simultaneously fighting several other rebel forces in the east, including the Rwandan-backed M23 group, which captured several major cities in the region last year.
