The problem was discovered by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during routine tests, which showed that the safety systems did not meet federal standards for preventing passenger ejection during accidents.
Risks for third-row passengers
According to the NHTSA report, during testing, excessive displacement of the head dummy was recorded, exceeding the permissible limit of 100 mm. This means that in the event of a rollover or side collision, passengers in the rear seats, where children are usually placed, risk serious injury due to incorrect airbag operation. Owners are advised to refrain from seating people in the outermost third-row seats until the defect is rectified.
The measured displacement of the ejected head form in the third-row seating area exceeded the 100 mm performance limit specified in the standard.

Currently, Hyundai has no information about actual accidents or injuries related to this defect, but an investigation conducted from July to November 2025 confirmed the systemic nature of the problem for the entire previous generation of the model.
Repair timelines and technical assistance
The solution to fix the malfunction is still under development, so owners and dealers will receive official instructions only at the end of March 2026. Since the recall is related to a violation of safety standards, Hyundai is obliged to carry out repairs free of charge, regardless of the expiration date of the factory warranty on the car.
This incident was another blow to the automaker's reputation: in late December 2025, the Tucson model was recalled due to fire risk, and recently - 84,000 Genesis vehicles due to display problems. Owners of the 2026 Palisade model year should not worry, as the airbag design was changed in the updated version.
