Explosions at training ground in Khmelnytskyi: sabotage and violations among versions, body fragments found

Five soldiers went missing after ammunition detonation, body fragments found. Eight soldiers were injured, the State Bureau of Investigation is considering two versions of the event.
In the case of the uncontrolled detonation of ammunition at a training ground in Khmelnytskyi, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has conducted initial investigative actions and is checking two versions, including sabotage; five servicemen are considered missing, fragments of bodies have been found during search operations, 8 servicemen have been injured, reported the bureau on Tuesday, writes UNN.
SBI employees conducted initial investigative actions at the site of the uncontrolled detonation of ammunition at a military training ground in Khmelnytskyi. The investigation is checking two main versions of the event - violations during the transportation and unloading of ammunition or sabotage
According to the SBI, "the uncontrolled detonation at a military facility on the outskirts of Khmelnytskyi occurred on July 31, 2026, at about 11:55 and lasted almost until the end of the day".
SBI employees, in cooperation with the command of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Police, and the State Emergency Service, are working at the scene and participating in eliminating the consequences.
One of the investigation's versions is a possible violation of rules during the transportation or unloading of ammunition, which could have caused the first explosion and subsequent detonation. The version of sabotage actions aimed at destroying weapons is also being checked
"As of August 3, 2026, five servicemen are considered missing. According to preliminary data, they were unloading ammunition at the warehouse of a military unit," the SBI reported.
During search operations, fragments of bodies were found. They have been handed over for forensic medical and molecular genetic examinations, which should identify the deceased. Other necessary examinations have also been appointed
"As a result of the explosions, eight servicemen received injuries of varying severity. There is no threat to their lives. No information about injured civilians has been received," the bureau stated.
"Investigators have already interrogated the command and servicemen of the unit, as well as the victims. Documentation related to the storage, transportation, and unloading of ammunition has been seized. After the detonation ended, a preliminary inspection of the scene was conducted," the report says.
Employees of the State Emergency Service, as noted, continue to demine the territory outside the military facility. "A special commission will be created for further work directly at the training ground," the bureau reported.
Also, the recording of damage to residential buildings and other property near the military facility continues.
Preliminary qualification - violation of rules for handling weapons, as well as substances and objects that pose an increased danger to the environment, which caused bodily injuries to several persons (Part 2 of Article 414 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. The criminal proceedings are under the personal control of the SBI leadership. Procedural guidance is carried out by the Khmelnytskyi Specialized Defense Prosecutor's Office of the Western Region.
