Cost of public transport in Kyiv to increase - mayor

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced an increase in the cost of public transport fares in the capital. According to him, the rising cost of fuel, electricity, consumables, and logistics forces the city to bring the fare closer to an economically justified level, UNN reports.

Following requests from the relevant Departments of the Kyiv City State Administration and trade unions of the city's transport enterprises, I instructed the Departments of Economy and Transport to prepare calculations based on economic justification regarding the revision of public transport fares in the capital.

- Klitschko said.

The mayor noted that the cost of travel in Kyiv remains the lowest in Ukraine. And it has not been reviewed since 2018.

The rising cost of fuel, electricity, consumables, and logistics forces the city authorities to bring the fare closer to an economically justified level.

- Klitschko added.

Also, as the mayor reported, implementing measures for the city's energy resilience, the Kyiv City Council will be forced to reallocate some budget items of the capital.

Klitschko reminded that the capital's transport is subsidized (12 billion UAH for this year, for example). Also, the state has not compensated the city for many years, as it should, for the free travel of privileged passengers. These funds (hundreds of millions of UAH annually) also come from the Kyiv budget.

Reducing the colossal subsidy for transport will allow, in particular, to direct part of these funds to the preparation for the next heating season.

- the mayor summarized.
