Chinese espionage platform active in 13 countries – study

A study by Arctic Wolf Networks found that the Chinese LightSpy platform is being used in 13 countries for surveillance. It enables data theft, and its infrastructure comprises 117 servers.
The Chinese spyware platform LightSpy has evolved into a large-scale digital surveillance tool used in at least 13 countries. This is stated in a study by cybersecurity company Arctic Wolf Networks, Bloomberg reports, writes UNN.

According to researchers, LightSpy can steal a wide range of data from users’ devices, including location information, audio recordings, correspondence, photos, videos, and screen recordings, as well as completely erase data from the device. The company notes that the platform operates as a commercial product with its own pricing system, payment infrastructure, and even a demonstration version for potential clients.
Arctic Wolf reported that LightSpy is "linked to Chinese state entities." The company also said it is already consulting with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and plans to provide the results of its study to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The platform is used by government and military entities

According to the company, the platform is used by clients across China, including government agencies, military organizations, businesses, and educational institutions. At present, LightSpy’s infrastructure consists of 117 servers, and the malware is also installed on network routers, allowing it to intercept and transmit data in Europe and Africa.
Researchers also reported that several years ago they managed to identify one of LightSpy’s operators after the individual accidentally left their real name and office address in the software code while placing an online order with the Kentucky Fried Chicken chain.
