Addendum
On July 14, France celebrates Bastille Day - the French national holiday. In France, it is called La Fête Nationale (National Holiday), as well as le quatorze juillet (the fourteenth of July). On July 14, 1789, Parisians stormed the Bastille - a symbol of royal oppression. Among the prisoners of the Bastille were many prominent figures of France: moralist writer François de La Rochefoucauld, playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, and philosopher François-Marie Arouet de Voltaire, who was a prisoner of the Bastille twice.
This event marked the beginning of revolutionary transformations. The French Revolution (1789-1799) is one of the most significant events in European history. It put an end to absolute monarchy, destroyed the feudal system, and initiated the modern republican model of the state, based on freedom, equality, and fraternity.
The causes of the revolution were social inequality, economic crisis, the disenfranchised position of the Third Estate, and the unreformed state system. In 1789, King Louis XVI convened the Estates-General, but the people's deputies from the Third Estate formed the National Assembly, which declared itself the sole legislative body.
The revolution abolished feudal privileges, nationalized church property, and introduced a new administrative system. In 1792, France became a republic, and the king was executed. In August, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was adopted, proclaiming equality before the law and freedom as a natural right. The revolution was accompanied by internal conflicts, terror, and external war, but its outcome was the birth of a new political culture. The ideas of the French Revolution influenced the entire world, inspiring movements for freedom, democracy, and human rights.
In 1880, this date officially became a national holiday of France.
