Details
It is noted that Energoatom and Holtec International signed the Agreement. The relevant document was signed online in the presence of the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko by the acting Chairman of the Board of NNEGC Energoatom Petro Kotin and President and CEO of Holtec International Chris Singh.
According to Kotin, this agreement is important not only for Energoatom, but also for the entire energy sector of Ukraine and the national economy.
This is the first step towards strengthening cooperation over the years. The creation of nuclear power production facilities in the country will not only strengthen the country's energy security, but will also allow Ukraine to become a world leader in a number of areas of nuclear energy development,
Meanwhile, the CEO of Holtec International reminded that Ukraine needs help from the US Congress.
The signing of this agreement was preceded by a devastating Russian attack last Thursday on a power plant that supplies electricity to the Kyiv region. Ukraine's defense, weakened by congressional inaction on a bill to provide financial assistance to the stricken country, was unable to stop more than a third of the drones and missiles that destroyed the power plant. Restoration of the country's energy infrastructure must begin now to stop Putin's efforts to completely destroy Ukraine's energy capacity,
Addendum
The Ministry of Energy reminded that the cooperation between Holtec International and Energoatom has a significant practical result - the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF) was built and commissioned in Ukraine, which makes it possible to save about $200 million annually. The Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility was put into operation, which saves about 200 million US dollars annually. This also allowed us to completely abandon the export of spent nuclear fuel to Russia.
In addition, in November 2023, during Herman Halushchenko's visit to Washington, D.C., Energoatom and Holtec International agreed to build a plant in Ukraine to produce spent nuclear fuel casks for the Centralized SFSF, which are currently manufactured in the United States.
Also, Energoatom and Holtec International signed an agreement on cooperation in the deployment of Holtec small modular reactors in Ukraine.
